THE COMPARISON TRAP AND HOW TO GET OUT OF IT

In one of the blogs that I follow, I found the following article shared by Natalie Ledwell, a best selling author, speaker and successful entrepreneur. She's passionate about helping others to achieve their greatest dreams and ambitions through her personal development programs and her online TV show, The Inspiration Show.

I thought this is a well illustrated and a very crucial topic needed to build our own grateful and successful characters, I could have just read it to better myself ,how ever realising the environments that I find my self  entangled in , most jealousy and unnecessary animosity around us is fueled by such comparison behaviours within our social circles and around our peers even families, it is very saddening how I notice this behaviour even from family backgrounds, friends and neighbors in our societies. We live in modern times now, even if your background is from the village where success used to be, a far fetched vision mostly motivated by TV personnels, this has greatly changed now; success is within, in order for us to be successful we need to live in a society that understands and practise being grateful with what we have in life, and comparison should not get us  to a space of upward comparison and downward comparison. We need to make it a norm to be happy for others and be grateful of whatever we have personally achieved in order to reach our higher success and also be able to build successful communities .

Below, enjoy reading and equipping yourself with tips to deal with this challenge.

article and pics blow: by Natalie Ledwell

These are some of the most common topics that trigger us to compare ourselves to others. And more often than not, even if our intentions are good, we can fall prey to an innate need to see how we compare to someone else.

Holstee co-founder Dave Radparvar describes two types of comparison categories :

First, there's upward comparison or when we compare ourselves to someone who we perceive to be in a higher or better position than us  – typically pertaining to wealth, status, etc.

It's like seeing someone else get to travel the world, for example, while you feel jealous that you aren't able to due to your personal circumstances.

And the second is downward comparison , often used to boost our self-esteem, which is when we compare ourselves to someone we feel is lower or beneath us.

This looks more like observing the poor skills or abilities of another person and comparing them to your own to make you feel better about yourself.

And in this day and age, social media plays a large role in many aspects of our lives — from business, travel, events we attend, relationships we engage in, and so on, it can feel almost impossible to escape the comparison trap laid out in front of us!

From seeing the successes of certain individuals broadcasted online to popular or influential personalities showcasing a picture-perfect way of life, the overload of perfection can have us secretly harboring feelings of lack and anxiety.

And whether we realize it consciously or not, staying stuck in the comparison trap can cause us to set unrealistic expectations for how we not only view others, but view ourselves –leading to much deeper mental and physical health issues.

So the challenge here is that comparing yourself to others can harm mental health, future success, self-worth, and the love and joy you're able to show yourself on a daily bas

 how to stop

Person Walking by Mirror Looking at Reflection

Well, there are a few things you can do when you start to notice yourself getting trapped in comparison or feel like you are being robbed of your joy because of it.

Drop into your gratitude.

Oh, gratitude…we must always start here. Dropping into your gratitude is one of the best ways to shift your mindset to that of abundance and to remind yourself that you have absolutely everything you need to be content and happy.

What we often fail to realize is that comparison stems from feelings of lack or insecurity. But when you counteract those feelings with gratitude, you are telling yourself and the Universe that who you are, and all that surrounds you is more than enough. This way, comparison isn't able to stand a chance.

Choose something else.

Comparison is one of those low-frequency feelings that never really make us feel good at the end of the day. But the thing is, we get to make a choice – we get to choose how we want to feel at any moment. So when you are feeling inclined to compare yourself to another or even catch yourself in the act, make the conscious choice to replace that feeling of comparison with something else.

Woman Looking at Reflection in Mirror

You can choose love. You can choose serenity. You can choose to let go. You can even choose laughter! If you feel your vibration starting to dwindle when comparing yourself to someone else, it would be unrealistic to try and completely ignore that feeling.

Instead, you want to tap into an emotion or experience that serves to be much more empowering. So the key here is in knowing that you have the power to make a choice and break free from feeling stuck by replacing comparison with something else.

Get physical.

Giving yourself a physical outlet to release low-frequency feelings can be the jolt that both your body and mind need to shift into a higher, more empowering vibration. When you think of the time and energy you may be spending, both consciously and subconsciously, in the web of comparison, you could be expending much more energy than you think.

That's why moving your body can be incredibly beneficial in dialing up your energetic frequency. Everything from practicing meditation, to going for a run, to taking a dip in the pool, exercise is one of the most proactive ways to shift your energetic state . It also provides you with the self-esteem and sense of accomplishment you may be searching for to give yourself the love and self-care it deserves to truly thrive (no matter what anyone else is doing!).

The thing about comparison is that it can make us feel lost and unsure of our abilities – even unworthy. But as you can see, to get out from under the comparison trap, you must first look inward and get good at turning the lens on all of the good that already surrounds you. When you're able to view yourself and your unique gifts for what they are, you're less likely to spend time feeling jealous of anyone else's life.

South Africa's own Official Music streaming platform goes live

South African music industry celebrates the birth of the first of it's own, South African music charts streaming platform.

In their Press release that RISA also shared with it's members, this official SA music streaming platform first went live on Wednesday the 1st of September 2021.

Taken from the Press release:

"A first, both in scale and magnitude, in the country. Brought to you by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), TOSAC – which will kick off with a focus on 'singles' in the digital music streaming space - the chart Will celebrate the popularity and success of the music being enjoyed from diverse artists by music fans across the country. To ensure accuracy and that the charts represent the broad South African digital music spectrum, TOSAC will aggregate data from three digital streaming platforms popularly used by local audiences: Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.  Says Sean Watson, the Chairperson of RiSA: "We are incredibly excited to be launching such a pioneering platform for the South African music industry and audiences, across different genres. This represents a significant milestone and a much-needed step up to aligning with popular forms of music consumption for the local music industry. Added Nhlanhla Sibisi, the CEO of RiSA: "We have a robust music industry in our country, and our people have a natural thirst for music. We have also seen an undeniable shift in how people consume music in the past few years, with more and more audiences making use of streaming services than before. We are thus excited to put in place an offering that not only recognises that but is set to help drive the growth of our industry." What you can expect on the charts: 'Weekly TOP 200 Tracks' which takes into account all tracks streamed in South Africa, including both local and international music; and  'Weekly TOP 100 Local ZA Tracks' which only includes tracks wherein at least one of the credited artists is from South Africa.

2  Sibisi explains: "We understand the competitive nature of the digital streaming space and that consumers are spoiled for choice with access to local and international music charts as well as digital streaming apps." "The launch of The Official South African Music Charts is a great milestone for music in South Africa and for the development of the industry across the continent. The charts will provide music fans, artists and record labels with a window into music streaming in one of the world's most vibrant and dynamic markets. IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) would like to congratulate its national member organisation RiSA, the company members and the contributing streaming platforms for this important achievement," said Frances Moore, CEO of IFPI. How the charts will be aggregated:  • Chart week will be from Friday to Thursday.  • Only digital streaming numbers are taken into account. • The number of streams shown in the charts is always weighted, so that subscription streams have more relevance than ad-funded streams. • Currently, no track exclusion policy or Accelerated Decline method is being applied.  Different versions of a track are aggregated to their corresponding original track, i.e.  • Radio Edits • Same song with additional featuring artists • DJs remixes, as long as the original artist is credited  • Different language/country versions Album covers are not aggregated to the original track.  How to access our first official charts:  TOSAC will go live at 12pm on 2nd September 2021 and guests can visit the official website www.theofficialsacharts.co.za which will serve as the central platform hosting all TOSAC charts and related content.

TOSAC will engage with audiences on their preferred social media platforms. We invite music lovers to follow and interact with us using our official social media account handles: • Facebook : The SA Charts @theofficialsacharts  • Instagram : The Official SA Charts @theofficialsacharts • Twitter : The Official SA Charts @OfficialSAChart  • TikTok  : The Official SA Charts @theofficialsacharts • YouTube :  The Official SA Charts "Our intention is to provide all South African music enthusiasts and general consumers with a platform that they can 'own' and one that reflects their own relationship with local and international music and their consumption patterns, irrespective of their taste in music. We also plan to consistently develop  TOSAC platform and tailor it to accommodate our constantly changing consumer needs," concludes Sibisi.  Notes to Editors TOSAC operates under the auspices of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) ---------------------------------------------------- ENDS---------------------------------------------------- For more information and queries: Roberta Makhambeni – robertam@meropa.co.za or +2782 309 3316
